How to connect ChatGPT to Bland so it can make phone calls

ChatGPT can make phone calls once you add the Bland connector in developer mode and sign in. Here is the setup, step by step, with what the connection can do.

Yes, ChatGPT can make phone calls, but not on its own. It needs a supported Bland integration first, and once that connection is in place it uses Bland's AI phone number plan to place real calls and report back what happened. Today you connect ChatGPT to Bland through ChatGPT apps and connectors in developer mode, by adding a connector and signing in with Bland. This post is published by Bland. What connects ChatGPT to Bland today#

Ordinary ChatGPT can't dial a phone by itself. It reaches Bland the same way it reaches other tools: through ChatGPT apps and connectors, which you turn on in developer mode. You add a connector that points at Bland's hosted MCP server, then sign in with Bland so the connector can act in your account. After that, ChatGPT can run Bland's tools from inside a normal chat.

The server URL you add is:

text
https://api.bland.ai/v1/mcp

Signing in with Bland means there's no API key to create or paste. The connector discovers Bland's authorization server on its own and opens Bland in your browser. You sign in, choose which organization the connector acts in, and approve what it can do. From then on, every tool runs as you, in the organization you picked, with the permissions of your role there.

Add the Bland connector step by step#

  1. Turn on developer mode for ChatGPT apps and connectors, then add a custom connector.
  2. Enter the server URL https://api.bland.ai/v1/mcp.
  3. When ChatGPT opens Bland in your browser, sign in at v2.app.bland.ai with your phone number, Google, or SSO.
  4. If you belong to more than one eligible organization, choose the one the connector should act in. The connection is scoped to that organization only.
  5. Review what the connector gets on the consent screen. To make a read-only connection, uncheck Create and change your agents. Leave it checked if you want ChatGPT to place calls and build agents.
  6. Finish, and the connector is live. Ask ChatGPT to list your Bland pathways to confirm it is authenticated before you ask for a call.

The access token the connector receives lasts one hour and is scoped to the one organization you chose. If you approved staying connected, the connector renews that access on its own so you don't have to sign in again. To disconnect later, remove the Bland connector in ChatGPT, which revokes its tokens.

Buy your plan or credits in the dashboard first#

Over a sign-in connection, the purchase tools (buy_credits and buy_phone_plan) aren't offered to the connector. That means ChatGPT can't buy the plan for you through this connection. You buy credits and the Agent Phone Plan in the Bland dashboard yourself, then let ChatGPT use the number and tools the purchase unlocked.

The order is: connect ChatGPT with sign in, then open the dashboard and either start the Agent Phone Plan or continue with free credits, then come back and ask ChatGPT to place a call. If you want to see how a self-setup flow works on an agent that can pay with its own wallet, that path is covered in how an AI agent signs itself up for a phone number, but it isn't how ChatGPT connects today.

What the connection lets ChatGPT do#

Once connected, ChatGPT drives Bland through the server's tools. It can:

  • Place outbound calls with create_call. This is a destructive tool, so it asks for your confirmation before it dials.
  • Read your call logs and transcripts, so you can ask what happened on the last call.
  • Pull analytics about your calls.
  • List and work with your agents and pathways.

ChatGPT does not text or receive calls on its own beyond what these Bland tools do. Bland handles the calls. The plan also supports texting and inbound calls on your Bland number, but texting and inbound configuration use separate Bland endpoints through the general API tool. A directory listing is in the works#

Use the developer-mode connector above, which Bland documents for ChatGPT. Check your ChatGPT workspace for connector availability; the allowed sources do not establish a directory listing or its publication status.

What it costs#

The Agent Phone Plan is $14.99 for your first month, which is 50% off, then $29.99/month. The first-month price applies to your first Agent Phone Plan, once per account owner. The plan includes a US local number, unlimited US and Canada calls and SMS subject to fair use, and you can cancel anytime in Billing & Plans. If you're not ready for a plan, you can start with $2 in free credits instead, which connect through a shared pool of Bland numbers at $0.14 per connected minute with no texting. Do I add an API key or sign in?#

For ChatGPT, you sign in with Bland. You add the connector with the URL https://api.bland.ai/v1/mcp and sign in when ChatGPT opens Bland in your browser. There's no key to paste.

Can ChatGPT buy the plan for me?#

No. Over a sign-in connection, the purchase tools aren't offered, so buy the Agent Phone Plan or add credits in the Bland dashboard yourself, then let ChatGPT use the tools.

Is there a ChatGPT plugin in the directory?#
