What is an AI phone call assistant?

The short answer

  • An AI phone call assistant is an AI that makes phone calls for you: it calls a business, asks your question, and reports back. With Bland's Agent Phone Plan, the AI you already use gets its own US local number to make and receive calls and send and receive texts.
  • It's for your own errands, not for answering calls for a business.

1 errand at a time

  • Your AI handles 1 call at a time across your account. If it's already on a call, a new incoming call hears a busy signal.
  • Calls and texts go to US and Canada numbers only.

How it works in 3 steps

Step 1: subscribe to the Agent Phone Plan

Choose the Agent Phone Plan in Bland. Your card is charged when you approve: $14.99 for your first month, then $29.99/month. Bland gives your AI its own dedicated US local number.

Step 2: connect your AI

Connect the AI you already use. ChatGPT, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, and Gemini CLI use Bland's MCP server; Meta Muse uses Bland's REST API; Grok Bot uses wallet-assisted setup or the manual MCP route. Keep your app's tool-approval prompts on, since calls and texts have real-world effects.

Step 3: run a safe test call

Ask your AI to call your own phone first. You hear how it sounds and confirm everything works. Then try a small errand: have it call a restaurant to ask about a table and text you what they said.

Phone errands your AI can run for you

Restaurants and hotels

  • Ask a restaurant about a table for 2 on Friday night, then get a text with what they said.
  • Ask your hotel about late checkout before you pack.

Appointments and opening hours

  • Move an appointment: your AI calls the office, requests a new time, and reports back with the options they offered.
  • Check a store's opening hours before you drive over.

Deliveries and prices

  • Confirm a delivery window so you know when to be home.
  • Get prices from a few service businesses, 1 call at a time, and receive a simple summary by text.

How a phone errand works, start to finish

You give the task

  • Tell your AI in chat or by text who to call, what to ask, and what you're happy with.
  • Keep tool-approval prompts on so you approve the call before your AI places it.

Your AI makes the call

  • Your AI calls from its own number, asks your question, and works within the limits you set.
  • Each outgoing call can last up to 60 minutes, and your AI handles 1 call at a time.

It reports back by text

  • When the call ends, your AI texts you what the business said: the answer, the options offered, or that nobody picked up.
  • Reply to that text to give it the next step.

What to tell your AI before it calls

Destination

  • The business name and its phone number. Your AI can call US and Canada numbers only.
  • For example: "Call the Italian place on Main Street."

Task

  • 1 clear question or request.
  • For example: "Ask if they have a table for 2 at 7pm on Friday."

Limits

  • What it can and can't agree to, like "Any time between 6 and 8pm works" or "Don't agree to a deposit."
  • Keep card numbers and other sensitive details out of the task.

Permission

  • Say what it may do without checking back, like "Move the appointment if they offer Tuesday."
  • Keep your app's tool-approval prompts on, so you approve each call before it goes out.

What your AI won't do

It won't promise outcomes

  • Your AI asks and requests. The business decides, and your AI reports back what it heard.
  • A table, a new appointment time, or a price is only set once the business says so.

It's not for emergencies or medical advice

  • For emergencies, call emergency services yourself. For health questions, talk to a professional directly.
  • It also isn't a way to prove who you are. If a business needs you on the line, make that call yourself.

It won't answer calls for a business

  • This AI phone call assistant is for your own errands, not a line for answering a company's calls.
  • It handles 1 call at a time. For parallel calls or high volume, Bland's Build and Scale plans cover that.

Works with the AI you already use

Chat apps

  • ChatGPT: add Bland's MCP URL (https://api.bland.ai/v1/mcp) as a connector, then sign in with Bland when ChatGPT opens it.
  • Claude Desktop: add Bland's MCP server with a Bland API key or Bland sign-in.

Coding tools

  • Claude Code uses Bland's MCP server with a Bland API key or Bland sign-in. Codex adds Bland's MCP server in ~/.codex/config.toml, with your API key read from the BLAND_API_KEY environment variable (Bland sign-in isn't available for Codex yet. Sign in with Bland will apply once dynamic client registration is available. Until then, Codex uses an API key).
  • Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, and Gemini CLI: add Bland's MCP server URL with your API key header, each in its own config spot.

Personal agents

  • Grok Bot: use wallet-assisted setup or the manual MCP route. Meta Muse: connect through Bland's REST API with a secure credential flow.
  • Your API key is in your Bland dashboard settings. Bland isn't affiliated with these companies; it connects through each app's supported tools.
