Can Muse make phone calls? Now it can, with its own number

Bland's API and Agent Phone Plan give Muse a dedicated US number, so it can place a call from that number and bring back the answer.

Muse is Meta's personal AI agent. It runs errands and other tasks for you when you ask in plain words. Meta says on its help pages that it is experimenting with letting Muse call businesses whose numbers are public. Access to that experiment may vary. Muse can also request calls through Bland using the connection described here.

We're Bland. We sell the Agent Phone Plan, a monthly plan that gives an AI agent its own phone number. Connect Muse to a Bland account on the plan and Muse gets a dedicated US number to call and text from, then tells you what the person or business said. You can use Muse in its iOS and Android apps, on the web, and in WhatsApp.

How does Muse connect to Bland?#

Muse can use an outside service through a key you give it, and that is how it reaches Bland. A Bland API key is the secret that lets software use your Bland account. Muse asks you to enter the key through its secure credential prompt and saves it.

Once Muse has the key, it can place a call, send a text, and read call details and any text replies. Step-by-step setup is on the Meta Muse phone calls page.

Two columns: how Muse connects to Bland, by sending requests over the web that carry your Bland API key, which you enter once in Muse's secure credential prompt, and what Muse can then do, which is place a call and send a text from its Bland number and read the call call result and text replies

When someone replies to a text, Bland's texting agent (an AI that answers texts sent to your Bland number) replies from the same number toward the goal Muse supplies as separate instructions with the first request to send a text.

How the connection works, for developers#

Muse talks to Bland's REST API, the set of web addresses software uses to work with a Bland account, and each request carries your key. Bland also runs an MCP server (MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, a standard some AI apps use to connect to tools), but Muse doesn't use it.

Do you need a Bland account first?#

Yes, but Muse can start the sign-up for you, and you finish it in a browser. The Meta Muse phone calls page covers both ways to connect.

  • If you already have a Bland API key, you give it to Muse through its secure credential prompt.
  • If you don't have one, Muse starts the sign-up for you. It shows you a link and a short code, and you open the link in a browser to sign up and approve the connection.

You approve the Agent Phone Plan yourself in your browser. Muse does not handle your card details or approve the payment for you. Before you pay, you can try Bland for free: the free version places outbound calls from a shared Bland number, and texting, incoming calls and its own phone number come with the Agent Phone Plan.

What does a call look like?#

Suppose you're on the way to a birthday and you've just remembered the book you meant to buy. In Muse you type:

Call Harbor Books at (415) 555-0121 and ask whether they have a hardcover of "Lanterns on the Low Road" in stock and whether they'd set one aside under Rivera until six tonight. Then tell me what they say.

(The shop, the number and the book are made up.)

Muse passes your request to Bland, and Bland's AI voice phones the bookshop from your dedicated number. After Muse reads the call result, you might see: "They have two hardcovers. They can put one behind the counter under Rivera until 6, and they close at 7." Muse can ask Harbor Books to hold the book, but whether one is behind the counter at six is up to the shop.

What does Muse get back after a call?#

When a call ends, Bland gives Muse its call summary. Muse turns those into the reply you read. You can also ask Muse later what was said on your last call.

You read Muse's answer in the chat. If you want more detail, ask Muse to retrieve the call result.

Example call with a bookshop: you ask Muse to call Harbor Books and ask them to hold a hardcover until six, Muse places a call from its Bland number, gets back the call summary, and turns those into a reply

Will Muse ask before it calls?#

That depends on your approval settings in Muse. An approval can carry over beyond a single request. If you want Muse to ask before every call, set calls to require approval in Muse's settings.

What are the Agent Phone Plan's limits?#

The Agent Phone Plan has these caps:

  • Only one call can run at a time across your whole account.
  • Your number handles up to 20 calls an hour and 50 a day, and it can send 20 texts an hour and 100 a day, counting both the first text and Bland's automatic replies.
  • Each outbound call can last 60 minutes at most, and incoming and outgoing calls share a daily allowance of 1,000 minutes.
  • Calls and texts can only go to US and Canada numbers.

While a call is running, another inbound caller hears a busy message and a second outbound request is rejected. Texts still arrive after you reach a text cap, but Bland stops replying until the allowance resets. Hourly allowances reset on the hour; daily allowances reset at midnight UTC (Coordinated Universal Time).

Bland's Build plan runs several calls at the same time. If you need more calls at once, see Build on our pricing page.

The Agent Phone Plan costs $9.99 for the first month (once per account owner) and then $19.99 a month, with no per-minute or per-text charge up to our plan's caps. The AI phone number page has the full plan details.

See Bland on your actual call volume.

10 to 15 minutes with the team that ships your first agent. We come prepared with answers, not a pitch deck.
