Can Grok Bot send text messages? With a dedicated number, yes

Grok Bot's Terms now cover its own calls, and any number assigned is temporary. Bland's Agent Phone Plan gives it a dedicated US number to text from, with a 20-an-hour cap.

The school year starts Monday and you're one blazer short. You'd like someone else to text the uniform shop. Grok Bot could do it through a supported Bland connection. Confirm that your Grok Bot version works with Bland before buying a plan; compatibility for the Phone with Bland template is still unconfirmed. Grok Bot is an AI agent from SpaceXSI, the company that makes the Grok chatbot. You give it tasks in plain words.

Bland sells the Agent Phone Plan, a monthly plan that gives an AI agent its own phone number. Once you connect Grok Bot to your Bland account, it can call and text from one US local number. Grok Bot sends the first text; Bland's texting agent carries on the conversation from the same number. That texting agent is an AI too, and it answers texts sent to your Bland number.

Can Grok Bot text without Bland?#

We have not found official documentation confirming that Grok Bot sends texts by itself. Elon Musk posted on 25 October 2026 that Grok Bot can call a person or business and report back, and Grok Bot's terms of service now have a section on phone calls. That section says nothing about text messages, and we couldn't find an official page from SpaceXSI on texting either.

For its built-in calls, Grok Bot gets a temporary number from a phone provider, and the provider can take that number back. Your Bland number stays on your Bland account and handles both calls and texts.

How does one request turn into a conversation?#

After you ask once, Grok Bot sends the first text from your Bland number and passes Bland the goal you gave it. From then on, Bland's texting agent replies to the shop from your number. It works toward your goal. Bland's automatic replies share the plan's text allowance with the first text Grok Bot sends.

You can then ask Grok Bot how the conversation went.

Four steps of one text request: Grok Bot sends the first text from your Bland number with the goal you gave it, the shop replies to that number, Bland's texting agent answers each reply until the shop has answered your question, and Grok Bot reports back when you ask how it went

What does a Grok Bot text errand look like?#

Say you need that size 8 navy blazer before school starts. Type this to Grok Bot:

Text Maple Street Uniforms at (415) 555-0163 and ask whether the size 8 navy blazer is back in stock. If it is, ask whether they can set one aside under the name Rivera until Friday. Keep going until you have an answer.

The shop, the number and the details are made up for this example.

What does Grok Bot report back?#

When you ask Grok Bot how it went, it reports back: "They have two size 8 blazers in navy. They said they can hold one until Friday afternoon, under Rivera, and asked you to come in before they close at 5."

You ask Grok Bot for an update when you want to know where the request stands. The shop still decides whether it can hold a blazer.

Example of a text errand: you ask Grok Bot to text Maple Street Uniforms about a size 8 navy blazer, Bland's texting agent handles the shop's replies from your Bland number, and Grok Bot reports back that the shop has two and can hold one until Friday afternoon under your name

How do you give Grok Bot a Bland number?#

If you have confirmed template compatibility with your version, start with Phone with Bland, a ready-made setup you add to Grok Bot. Its underlying connection method remains unconfirmed. Bland also documents two ways for developers to connect.

  • The template option: How it works: You add Phone with Bland, a ready-made template we built for Grok Bot, and follow its steps
  • The sign-up option: How it works: This only works for a new Bland account. Grok Bot signs up and pays through Link, a payment app, using a Link shared payment token. Grok Bot can only pay after you approve the payment in Link. The token pays for the first month only. The owner must put a card on file for renewal, and the plan then renews monthly until you cancel
  • The API key option: How it works: You give Grok Bot your Bland API key. That key lets software such as Grok Bot use your Bland account

The Grok Bot phone calls page covers all three, including where you add the template in Grok Bot, what the template's setup asks for and how to handle your key. Bland's docs cover the sign-up and API key options, and they say Grok Bot needs an extra compatibility check. The AI phone number to text page explains how texting works on the Agent Phone Plan.

What do the sign-up and API key options need? (For developers)#

Both options end with a custom connection over MCP. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, and it's a standard way for an AI app to use outside tools, such as one that sends a text. Your version of Grok Bot has to let you enter a server URL and an Authorization header. The URL is the web address of Bland's MCP server, and the header carries your key with each request. The docs don't say whether the template option uses the same connection.

What happens when you hit the text cap?#

The Agent Phone Plan allows 20 texts an hour and 100 texts a day, and every text sent from your number counts, including the texting agent's replies. A back-and-forth with one shop can use several of those. Texts can only go to US and Canada numbers.

Once you hit a cap, texts from the shop still reach your number and stay in the conversation, but Bland's texting agent stops replying until the cap resets. The hourly cap resets on the hour, and the daily cap resets at midnight UTC (Coordinated Universal Time).

Two columns about the text cap of 20 texts an hour and 100 a day: Grok Bot's first text and every reply from Bland's texting agent count toward it, and when you hit it, texts to your number still arrive and stay in the conversation while the texting agent sends no replies until the cap resets on the hour or at midnight UTC

Does the Agent Phone Plan suit texting a long list of people?#

The Agent Phone Plan is for one agent doing one person's errands.

What does it cost?#

The Agent Phone Plan costs $9.99 for the first month (once per account owner) and $19.99 a month after that. The AI phone number page has the full details.
